Hand-cut fries, & sea salt

French fries, despite their name, actually originated in Belgium where potatoes were fried as early as the late 17th century in the Meuse Valley. Poor villagers switched to frying potatoes in winter when they couldn't catch fish. "French fries" got their name during World War I when American soldiers in Belgium tasted them, as the official language of the Belgian army was French.
